RecLumen privacy policy
RecLumen records your screen — and, when you turn them on, your microphone, your camera and other apps' sound — into movie files on your Mac. RecLumen has no account, no analytics, no advertising and no network access. The app itself cannot send your recordings, or anything else, to the developer or to anyone else.
What RecLumen records
- Screen: only the display, window or region you choose, and only between pressing Record and the recording finishing.
- App sound (system audio): sound played by other apps, such as the other people in a meeting. For a browser window this includes sound from every tab and window of that browser.
- Microphone: your voice, when RecLumen's microphone is on. This includes times when you are muted in a meeting app — muting there does not mute RecLumen.
- Camera: a round webcam picture drawn into the video, when the camera is on.
- Clicks: when click highlights are on, RecLumen notes where the pointer is each time you click during a recording, only to draw a fading ring into the video. It does not see what you click on or anything you type, and click positions are not saved anywhere except as the rings in the video.
Recordings are saved as movie files in ~/Movies/RecLumen, or in a folder you choose. They stay there until you move, share or delete them.
Previews and meters
While the Setup window is open, RecLumen can show a live camera preview and a microphone level meter, so you can check them before recording. These are processed in memory only to draw the preview and the meter; nothing is saved or sent. They stop when you close the Setup window or turn the input off, and macOS shows its usual camera and microphone indicators while they run.
Does anything leave your Mac?
RecLumen does not transmit anything: its App Sandbox does not include network access, and it contains no analytics, crash-reporting or advertising code.
Your data can leave your Mac only through things you do or services you have set up:
- you export, share, upload, email or otherwise send a recording;
- you save recordings to a folder that a sync service manages (such as iCloud Drive or Dropbox), or to a network or external drive — that service or device then handles the files under its own terms;
- you open this web page, which your browser loads;
- you buy or restore RecLumen Pro, which the Mac App Store handles under Apple's terms;
- you have allowed macOS to share crash and usage data with app developers; Apple then handles that data under Apple's privacy policy.
Buying RecLumen Pro
RecLumen is free to download; the free version records up to 15 minutes at a time. RecLumen Pro, which removes that limit, is a one-time in-app purchase made through the Mac App Store. Apple processes the payment and keeps the purchase record with your Apple Account. RecLumen only asks macOS whether your Apple Account owns RecLumen Pro; it never sees your name, email address or payment details.
What RecLumen keeps about your recordings
To reopen recent recordings and recover them after an unexpected quit, RecLumen keeps a short list of the recordings it made — file location, length, settings, trim points, bookmarks and notes such as "microphone stopped at 12:03" — in its own container on your Mac (up to 30 entries). Your preferences, such as the chosen source, devices and folder, are stored in macOS's standard preferences. RecLumen also writes diagnostic messages to the macOS system log on your Mac (for example, that an export finished, with the exported file's name); they stay on your Mac unless you choose to share a diagnostic report. None of this is sent anywhere by RecLumen.
Keeping and deleting
- Recordings are kept until you delete them. RecLumen never deletes a recording; the only files it removes are its own incomplete ones — a recording that failed before anything playable was written, or an export that was cancelled or failed.
- Recovered recordings: if RecLumen quits unexpectedly while recording, the part recorded up to then stays in the destination folder, and RecLumen tells you about it the next time it opens. Delete it in Finder if you do not want it.
- Temporary files: an export is written to a hidden temporary file next to its destination and renamed when it is complete.
- Everything else: removing RecLumen and its container (
~/Library/Containers/app.reclumen.recorder) removes the recordings list and preferences. Your recordings are not inside the container and are not removed.
Permissions
Screen & System Audio Recording, Camera and Microphone access are requested through macOS, and you can turn any of them off at any time in System Settings › Privacy & Security. RecLumen then cannot use that input; a recording in progress may stop, keeping what was recorded so far. Turning a permission off does not delete any recordings.
Recording other people
A meeting recording captures other people's voices and images. RecLumen does not tell other participants that you are recording, and it does not trigger the "this meeting is being recorded" notice of Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams or any other meeting service. You are responsible for telling participants and for obtaining any consent required where you and they are.
